Everybody dies, so you would think that we adequately prepare patients and families for this inevitability. But we don’t. The majority of Americans die in a facility connected to life sustaining machines. The “”end of life phase”” is an area where healthcare providers can help improve the experience for everyone involved. Aligning the patients wishes with the medical care delivered incorporating palliative care philosophies, and utilizing community resources all contribute to a better death.
